Edinburgh Comedy Festival

The Edinburgh Comedy Festival is the largest comedy festival in the world, showcasing the vast comedy offerings of the Festival's 4 largest comedy venues: The Gilded Balloon, Underbelly, Assembly and Pleasance.

We have been working with the Edinburgh Comedy Festival since its inception in 2008, beginning our ongoing relationship by designing the festival’s identity.

In addition to the brand development, our design and artworking team undertakes the design and production of the annual brochure. It’s a bit of beast with over 500 listings and a print run of around 400,000 (but we love working on it with the 4 producers and their super enthusiastic teams). It’s distributed in the Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday newspapers, and throughout hundreds of Edinburgh venues in August.

Working with XML
With such a big job and so much information to get 100% right, this was a perfect opportunity for our design team to work with our developers – who wrangled the data into XML and wrote scripts to automate much of the initial layout process. This makes the information much more flexible, and allows the staff to feed it directly into their website.

The Edinburgh Comedy Festival account joins Heehaw's growing portfolio of large scale print design and management projects. This includes the recently completed 2009 Undergraduate Prospectus for the University of Edinburgh and the listings brochure for Underbelly's Comedy Festival in Brighton, and the Magners Comedy festival - again in Brighton.
